Best Writing Tips for Bloggers: Increase Your Reader’s Engagement

Blogging is a writing style like nothing else. It is far from the academic writing you are probably used to.

Once you have mastered marketing your blog, you have to learn how to keep the reader engaged.

Do you notice when you’re on someone’s blog and before you know it you’re at the end?

Smooth writing, that’s what is happening when a writer can easily take a reader from the beginning to the end.

It’s what we all strive to be and with practice and implementing the following tips you can easily improve your copywriting skills.

Let me break it down for you:

First tip:

You have to create an enticing headline or no one will even click on your blog.

But you shouldn’t judge a book by its cover….it doesn’t matter, we do!

And we judge blog posts by their titles. So spend some time crafting engaging headlines.

Here is a tip how:

Add a superlative in your title such as:

  • Free
  • Best
  • Easy
  • You/Your

A study was done that stated 80% of users clicked on a headline that included one of those words vs headlines that didn’t.

Second Tip to Becoming a Badass Copywriter:

Only 2-3 sentences per line.

That’s it!

Most readers nowadays > 90% to be exact are reading your blog posts on their phone. That means when they come up to a big block of text they scroll past or back out.

Third Tip:

Remember WINFM! Your audience is selfish, we all are. They want to know “what’s in it for me?”

So don’t blab on and on about your dog’s surgery or how your doctor’s appointment went….

Less is more – get to the point – what’s in it for your audience. What problem are you trying to solve for them?

Another way to keep your reader engaged is:

Inserting pictures throughout your blog post.

Either insert pictures you’ve taken or hop on one of the many free stock photo sites and grab some.

Sites such:

All have great photos for free that you can use throughout your blog post!

Last but maybe the most important tip:

Insert transitional words and phrases throughout your writing.

You may have noticed I do this in my writing

Each ‘paragraph’ you write on your blog must pass the reader onto the next paragraph.

That’s where transitional phrases come in.

Here are some examples:
